i keep forgetting (ironically enough) how enamored people are of memory. we cling to memories of events long past, regardless of whether they were pleasant or painful. in fact, some people seem particularly proud of their unhappy memories, and trot them out at the drop of a hat.

in some cases they could be called grudges; in others, it seems more like obsessions. and they needn’t have to have any pertinence to present day events; even if the situation they took place in has long ended, they show up as mysteriously as mail to someone who moved away years before and as powerful as if the misdeed was only yesterday.

i don’t exclude myself from this type of behavior. but as i said, i’m becoming more and more lucid to its popularity, and the ways in which it handicaps people. as a result of this awareness, i see yet another aspect of myself i wish to improve; to let go of the sad, bad things that have either been resolved or cannot be resolved, and to not let myself suffer as a result other people’s emotional necrophilia.

we’ll see. it’s hard to give up telling your ghost stories, especially if they’re the most interesting stories you have.
